How Do You Check Your ITIN Status by Phone?
Follow these 7 steps to check your ITIN application status with the IRS. The entire process takes 15-45 minutes depending on hold times.
Confirm 7 Weeks Have Passed
Count 7 weeks from the date you mailed your W-7 application (or from when your CAA submitted it). If you mailed internationally, add 2-4 weeks for postal delivery to the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, TX. Use our processing time calculator to estimate your timeline.
Gather Your Information
Have ready: your full legal name (exactly as on Form W-7), date of birth, the tax year on your application, and the mailing address you used. If you filed a tax return with your W-7, know the filing status and income amount.
Call 1-800-829-1040
Available Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM local time. For shortest wait times, call between 7 AM and 8 AM. Wednesday and Thursday have shorter waits than Monday and Tuesday. International callers: 267-941-1000.
Select Your Language
The automated system offers English and Spanish. Select your preferred language. The IRS also has multilingual support available through interpreter services if needed.
Navigate to ITIN Inquiries
Follow the automated menu prompts. The menu options change periodically, but you need the option for individual tax identification numbers or ITIN inquiries. If unsure, say "ITIN" when prompted or press 0 for an operator.
Verify Your Identity with the Agent
The IRS agent verifies your identity before sharing status information. Provide your name, date of birth, and address. If any information does not match their records, they cannot help. Ensure you use the exact name and address from your W-7.
Get Your Status Update
The agent tells you one of 4 statuses: application received and processing, additional documents needed, application approved and ITIN assigned, or application rejected. Write down any reference numbers or instructions the agent provides. Learn about ITIN status codes explained.

What Do IRS ITIN Notices Mean?
The IRS sends 4 types of notices related to ITIN applications. Understanding these notices helps you respond correctly and avoid delays.
CP 565 - ITIN Assigned
Good news. This notice confirms the IRS has approved your application and assigned your ITIN. The notice includes your 9-digit ITIN (format: 9XX-XX-XXXX). Keep this notice for your records. Your ITIN is active and can be used immediately for tax filing.
CP 566 - Additional Information Needed
The IRS needs additional documents or information before processing your application. Respond within 60 days by mailing the requested items to the address on the notice. Common requests: certified copies of identity documents, additional proof of foreign status, or a corrected W-7 form. Learn about required ITIN documents.
CP 567 - Application Rejected
Your ITIN application has been denied. The notice states the specific reason. You can reapply by submitting a new W-7 with corrected information. There is no limit on reapplications. Read our guide on what to do if your ITIN is rejected.
CP 575 - EIN Assigned
This notice applies to EIN applications, not ITIN. It confirms the IRS has assigned your Employer Identification Number. If you applied for both an EIN and ITIN, you may receive CP 575 (for the EIN) weeks before CP 565 (for the ITIN) since EINs process faster. See our EIN service page.
How Does itin.so Track Your Application?
If you applied for your ITIN through itin.so, you do not need to call the IRS yourself. We track your application from the moment we submit it. Both $297 clients receive 3 email updates: when your application is submitted, when the IRS confirms receipt, and when your ITIN is issued.

What If Your ITIN Application Has a Problem?
Scenario 1: Application Exceeds 11 Weeks
If processing exceeds 11 weeks, call 1-800-829-1040 and request a case review. You can also contact the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) at 1-877-777-4778 if the IRS cannot resolve the delay. TAS handles cases involving financial hardship or systemic IRS issues. File Form 911 (Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance) if needed. Check our ITIN application tracking guide.
Scenario 2: IRS Requests Additional Documents (CP 566)
Respond within 60 days. The notice specifies exactly what the IRS needs. Common requests include certified passport copies, proof of foreign status (entry/exit stamps), or a corrected Form W-7. Mail your response to the address on the notice, not the original submission address. Include a copy of the CP 566 notice with your response. Review the full ITIN document checklist.
Scenario 3: Application Rejected (CP 567)
You can reapply immediately. There is no waiting period and no limit on reapplications. Correct the specific issue cited in the CP 567 notice. Submit a fresh Form W-7 with all required documents. If you applied through itin.so, we prepare and resubmit your application at no additional charge. Read about ITIN application mistakes to avoid.
Scenario 4: Expired ITIN Needs Renewal
If your existing ITIN has expired (not used on a tax return for 3 consecutive years), you need to renew it, not check status. Renewal uses the same Form W-7 with the "Renew" checkbox. Processing takes 6-11 weeks, the same as new applications. See our ITIN renewal guide for the complete process.
