ITIN for Dependents: Application Guide 2026
Updated April 2026
If you are filing a US tax return and have dependents who do not qualify for a Social Security Number, each one needs their own Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). This includes children, spouses, and other qualifying relatives listed on your return. Applying for multiple family members at once is common, and the process is straightforward when you know what documents each person needs and who is responsible for signing. This guide walks through every step of applying for an ITIN dependent, from eligibility to the Child Tax Credit benefits you unlock once the ITIN is assigned.
When Dependents Need an ITIN
A dependent needs an ITIN whenever they are listed on a US federal tax return but cannot obtain a Social Security Number. The most common scenarios involve non-resident spouses, children born outside the United States, and other family members who are claimed as dependents for tax purposes.
The IRS requires a valid taxpayer identification number for every person listed on a tax return. If your dependent does not have an SSN and is not eligible for one, an ITIN is the only option. Without it, you cannot claim the dependent on your return, which means you miss out on deductions and credits that could save you thousands of dollars.
You will also need an ITIN for a dependent spouse who is filing jointly with you, even if the spouse has no US income. The IRS treats a joint return as a single filing with two taxpayer identification numbers, and both must be present for the return to be accepted.
If you are on an H-1B visa and your spouse holds an H-4 visa, the spouse needs an ITIN to be included on your joint tax return. The same applies to children who are in the US on dependent visas and do not qualify for an SSN.
Which Dependents Qualify for an ITIN
Not every family member automatically qualifies for an ITIN. The IRS grants ITINs to dependents who meet specific criteria and have a valid federal tax purpose. Here are the categories of dependents who qualify:
Spouse claimed on a joint return. If you are married and filing jointly, your non-resident or resident alien spouse needs an ITIN. This applies regardless of whether the spouse earned any US income during the tax year.
Children claimed as dependents. Your children qualify if they meet the IRS dependent tests (relationship, age, residency, and support) and do not have an SSN. This includes biological children, adopted children, stepchildren, and foster children in certain circumstances.
Other qualifying relatives. Parents, siblings, and other relatives who live with you and for whom you provide more than half of their financial support may qualify as dependents. Each must meet the IRS qualifying relative test, and each needs a separate ITIN if they do not have an SSN.
Who does not qualify. Dependents who are eligible for a Social Security Number should apply for an SSN instead. US citizens, permanent residents (green card holders), and certain visa holders who have work authorization are eligible for an SSN and do not need an ITIN.
Documents Required for Dependent ITIN Applications
Each dependent needs their own set of identity and foreign status documents. The requirements differ slightly between children and adult dependents like a spouse.
For children under 18:
- Valid passport (this is the simplest single document that satisfies both identity and foreign status requirements)
- If no passport: birth certificate showing parental names, plus a school record, medical record, or visa showing the child's name and a US entry date
- For children under 6 who have no school records: medical records and the birth certificate are sufficient
For a spouse or adult dependent:
- Valid passport (strongly recommended as the single document that covers both identity and foreign status)
- If no passport: a combination of national ID card, birth certificate, and visa or US entry/exit records
- Civil birth certificate with certified English translation if the original is in another language
The passport is by far the easiest path for both children and adults. It is the only single document that the IRS accepts to prove both identity and foreign status. Without a passport, you need at least two documents from the IRS accepted list, and the combinations can be confusing. When you work with itin.so, we review your documents before submission and confirm exactly which combination the IRS will accept for each family member.
Keep Your Passports Safe
If you mail your application directly to the IRS, you must include original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency. The IRS will return originals after processing, but that means your family's passports are out of your hands for 7 to 11 weeks. Using a Certifying Acceptance Agent eliminates this risk entirely. A CAA certifies copies of your documents so the originals never leave your possession.
Step-by-Step Application Process for Dependent ITINs
Applying for ITINs for your dependents follows the same general process as any ITIN application, but with a few important differences related to signatures and supporting documents. Here is how it works:
Step 1: Determine eligibility for each dependent. Confirm that each person you want to include qualifies as a dependent under IRS rules and does not already have (or qualify for) a Social Security Number. If any dependent previously had an ITIN that expired, they will need a renewal rather than a new application.
Step 2: Gather documents for each dependent. Collect the required identity and foreign status documents for every family member who needs an ITIN. A passport for each person is the simplest approach. Make sure all documents are current and unexpired.
Step 3: Complete a separate Form W-7 for each dependent. Every dependent gets their own W-7. On each form, indicate that the applicant is applying as a dependent and reference the primary taxpayer (you) by name and TIN. The reason for applying is box (d) on the W-7, which covers dependents claimed on a tax return.
Step 4: Attach to your federal tax return. All W-7 forms for your dependents must be submitted along with the federal tax return on which you are claiming them. The IRS will not process a dependent ITIN application without the associated tax return, unless a specific exception applies (such as a treaty benefit).
Step 5: Submit the complete package. Mail everything together (tax return plus all W-7 forms plus all supporting documents) to the IRS ITIN Operation center in Austin, Texas. Or, work with a CAA who handles the submission for you after certifying all documents. The IRS processes the entire family package together and assigns ITINs for all approved dependents at the same time.
Applying for the whole family?
Your first ITIN application starts at $197. Each additional family member is just $79. We handle every W-7, verify every document, and submit one complete package to the IRS so your family is covered in a single submission.

Who Signs the W-7 for a Dependent
The signature requirements for a dependent W-7 depend on the age and capacity of the dependent. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons the IRS rejects family applications, so pay close attention.
Children under 18. A parent or court-appointed legal guardian must sign the W-7 on behalf of the child. The parent signs in the applicant signature field and checks the appropriate box indicating they are the parent or guardian. The parent's name and taxpayer identification number should also appear in the delegate section of the form.
Dependents aged 18 and older. Adult dependents must sign their own W-7 form. This includes a spouse filing jointly, an adult child still claimed as a dependent, or an elderly parent you support. The primary taxpayer cannot sign on behalf of an adult dependent unless there is a legal power of attorney or the dependent is physically or mentally incapable of signing.
Dependents who cannot sign. If a dependent is unable to sign due to age (an infant, for example) or incapacity, the legal guardian signs and includes documentation of their authority. For infants and very young children, the parent's signature is standard and does not require any additional legal documentation beyond the parent-child relationship shown on the birth certificate.
When you apply through itin.so, we prepare each W-7 with the correct signature configuration and walk you through exactly where to sign for each family member. This eliminates one of the most frequent causes of rejection for family applications.
Processing Timeline for Family ITIN Applications
The good news about applying for multiple dependents at once is that the IRS processes the entire package together. You do not wait 7 to 11 weeks per person. All W-7 forms submitted with the same tax return move through the system as a group.
Preparation phase. With itin.so Standard service, preparation for a family application takes 7 to 10 business days. This includes reviewing and certifying documents for each dependent, completing all W-7 forms, and assembling the complete submission package. Express service reduces this to 2 to 3 business days.
IRS processing phase. Once the IRS receives your package, processing takes 7 to 11 weeks. All ITINs in the family package are assigned at the same time. You will receive a separate CP565 notice for each approved ITIN, though they usually arrive within a few days of each other.
Total timeline. From start to finish, expect 9 to 13 weeks with Standard CAA service and 8 to 12 weeks with Express. If you mail the application yourself, add time for document preparation and postal transit in both directions, which can push the total to 11 to 19 weeks.
If one W-7 in the package has an issue (for example, a document is missing for one child), the IRS may process the valid applications and send a separate notice for the incomplete one. This does not delay the rest of the family. The remaining ITINs are assigned on schedule while you resolve the issue with the flagged application.
Start Early for Tax Season
If you need dependent ITINs to file your tax return by the April deadline, begin the process no later than December. Family applications involve more documents and more W-7 forms, which means more opportunities for small errors that can cause delays. Starting early gives you time to gather every document, resolve any issues, and still have your ITINs before the filing deadline arrives.
Family Pricing: $79 for Each Additional Dependent
Applying for ITINs for an entire family does not mean paying full price for every person. At itin.so, your first ITIN application is priced at $197 for Standard service or $297 for Express. Every additional family member in the same submission is just $79.
Here is what that looks like for a typical family:
| Family Size | Standard Total | Express Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $197 | $297 |
| 2 people (e.g., spouse + child) | $276 | $376 |
| 3 people | $355 | $455 |
| 4 people | $434 | $534 |
Each application includes W-7 form preparation, document review and certification, IRS submission, application tracking, and WhatsApp support. The $79 family rate applies to every additional dependent regardless of whether they are a child, spouse, or other qualifying relative.
All applications come with a 100% money-back guarantee. If the IRS declines any application in your family package, you receive a full refund for that specific application.

Apply for Your FamilyChild Tax Credit Benefits with an ITIN Dependent
One of the biggest financial reasons to apply for dependent ITINs is the tax credits they unlock. The savings from these credits often pay for the cost of the ITIN application many times over.
Credit for Other Dependents. For each dependent with an ITIN (including children and non-child dependents), you may claim up to $500 per person through the Credit for Other Dependents. This is a non-refundable credit that reduces your tax liability dollar for dollar. It applies to dependents who do not qualify for the full Child Tax Credit.
Child Tax Credit (non-refundable portion). Depending on your filing situation and the child's circumstances, you may be able to claim up to $2,000 per qualifying child. However, it is important to note that the refundable portion (the Additional Child Tax Credit) requires the child to have a valid Social Security Number. The non-refundable portion can still be claimed with an ITIN.
Head of Household filing status. If you are unmarried and have a qualifying dependent, claiming that dependent with an ITIN may allow you to file as Head of Household instead of Single. This filing status comes with a larger standard deduction and more favorable tax brackets, which can save you several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on your income.
Do the math. Consider a family with two children who need ITINs. Using Standard service, the total cost is $276 ($197 + $79). The Credit for Other Dependents alone is worth up to $1,000 ($500 per child), and that is before accounting for any additional credits, deductions, or filing status advantages. The return on investment is significant for most families.
